What is StarWind HCA?

StarWind HyperConverged Appliance (HCA) is a turnkey hyper-converged platform that merges compute, storage, network, and software into a nuclear 2-node footprint. The solution is designed to simplify HCI management for Enterprise ROBO, SMB & Edge, while offering flexible scalability and powerful performance.

Users can start with two nodes, based on HeartBeat, that can be switchless and function without additional equipment. StarWind HCA is a software-centric architecture that removes the need for proprietary components. StarWind Engineers perform the configuration, testing, migration, and integration for users, free of charge.

StarWind HyperConverged Appliance:

  • allows using 100% of underlying storage performance
  • has no hardware compatibility lists (HCLs)
  • does 2- or 3-way replication + local RAID 5/6/10
  • does VAAI and ODX data offloading
  • includes load balancing and data locality
  • does VM-centric hypervisor-level snapshots, and more.

To minimize CapEx and OpEx further, StarWind ProActive Premium Support (included in every license) substitutes an IT squad for the sake of cluster health assurance. ProActive Support monitors user environments 24/7/365, and uses machine learning to detect abnormal behavior so issues are prevented before they can become a problem.

The vendor presents StarWind HCA as a hyper-converged world enclosed in a tiny “building block” that comes at a reasonable price.

Starwind HyperConverged Appliance is used in a two-node cluster running HyperV. HCA has allowed for easily entering the hyper-converged market, kept costs down, and added much resiliency to my on-premise network. It addresses my virtualization needs while being very user-friendly, budget friendly, and management friendly. It solves my highly available virtualization problem.

HCA is well suited for the SMB space. Schools, non-profits, and budget-conscious orgs that want to virtualize their environment. HCA is hypervisor agnostic. My experience is with HyperV, and it works great! HCA is well suited for two or more hosts. The team works with you to spec what you need and is very responsive along the way.

We utilize StarWind as a clustered Hyper-V platform in our organization. We upgraded from a stand alone Hyper-V server to StarWind in 2019 and its been absolutely amazing to use. Support monitors the devices 24/7 which takes additional time off my hands to work on my other responsibilities. I've even been surprised a few times when we had a Guest issue and Starwind support actually remoted in and resolved it with our assistance. Its been a great experience, I can't imagine going with any othet vendor from here on out.

  • UI could be updated
  • Some safety checks would be nice
  • Make a "entry level admin" security level for some tasks
I love my HCA for a 2 Hyper-V cluster, not sure how well it scales past 2. I know they have a solution for it, but it seems like it could be a bit cumbersome. Physical setup was easy, software required some hand holding with support, however they are very knowledgable and were able to get us setup without any major issues.

We are a company with about 50 employees and StarWind HCA is the backbone of our on-prem IT infrastructure. It runs 4 Windows Server VMs in a high-availability cluster + 2 Domain Controllers. When I started at the company everything was run off a single bare-metal server install and downtime was common. Since migrating to StarWind HCA performance has improved and downtime has been reduced to almost 0.
  • A single off-the-shelf solution for a high-availability system (usually entails a mix of solutions)
  • Support is excellent. Responses are prompt and reps are knowledgeable.
  • Relatively low cost
  • Command Center (web portal) management is slow and clunky. I find it easier to manage directly from the node OS.
  • Scalability could be problematic for larger/faster-growing companies
StarWind HCA is ideal for small and medium sized businesses who want to run their servers on-site and desire high-availability on a budget. Their support handles the initial software setup/configuration and leave you with a hypervisor that is ready to be loaded with VMs and utilized. Once setup it is easy to manage and reliable, and if you do encounter issues support is responsive and effective. Probably not the ideal solution for large enterprises or fast-growing companies since I imagine it's more difficult to scale than some other solutions - but if you have a somewhat consistent performance/storage needs, want the benefits of a HA cluster, and want to host things yourself, it is an excellent solution.

I use StarWind to provide shared storage for my hypervisor cluster servers, it solves and addresses the business problem of having to manage additional shared storage solutions and the complexity of networking this requires, my use case is the norm for many IT professionals in this current day and time, and I confirm it does everything they advertise after extensive testing it performs as well as any other solution, with the added benefit of low deployment timeless management overhead and a monitored system by StarWind directly.

We use StarWind managed HyperV service for Virtualized Servers, redundancy servers and the Star Wind support alerts us if there are any issues with the HyperV servers. Their phone support is professional and great.
  • Virtualization
  • Hardware redundancy
  • The central management
  • in the past due to time zone differences to get to phone support later in the afternoon sometimes we could not get a hold of second level technical support on the same day. however we feel that this has been improved in the past year. Normally we can get to first level support immediately and then if an escalation needed, we schedule a time with second level support later
  • Customer portal to schedule a time
  • Discounts on Upgrades
It is well suited for Virtualized Environment The central management, redundancy and 24x7 alert system via managed service provider is a key component that we were looking for. The HyperV Servers comes Preconfigured and the product sales specialist recommends Hardware specs as needed for your environment. In case of updates for the firmware and StarWind Softwares the Starwind support contacts us since it is managed service and remotely does the upgrade which is great.

We use StarWind Virtual SAN on-premise to host 30+ Hyper-V VMs. We also have a test environment with 15 VMs. The product is amazing due to its ease of use and reliability. Before StarWind, we were on a traditional SAN/Switch/Server setup (AKA inverted pyramid). Obviously, storage was not fully redundant, so we wanted to address this in the new solution.
  • Simplicity and ease of management were great. Much easier to maintain than other complex redundant solutions.
  • Proactive support is great and available 24/7.
  • Reliability have been solid (no downtime at all) for 5 years.
  • Support team has slight accent but is not too difficult to understand.
  • Emphasis on security can be improved. Things like default passwords were not changed initially until requested.
  • Can't really think of much else...If I had to split hairs...on reboots sometimes it took a while to sync with the other node. Max was 30 minutes, but 99% of the time it's 3-4 minutes.
StarWind HyperConverged Appliance is well suited for SMB companies that need a simple, reliable, and fully redundant solution. Small IT teams can't afford to spend a large portion of their day managing a complex system. StarWind HyperConverged Appliance helps with this problem with its vSAN system. Pricing for StarWind is very competitive as well. We got several other quotes and StarWind came in much lower. We've had zero issues with downtime in 5 years, all smooth.

We are running a two-node HCA cluster and have been very happy with the performance and proactive support. StarWind HyperConverged Appliance is one of the only solutions that allowed us to simplify with hyper-convergence without spending a fortune. We looked at other HCI systems to replace our traditional SAN/host system and nothing compared to StarWind HyperConverged Appliance in terms of cost or functionality. If you are a smaller organization or school, I would highly recommend looking at StarWind HyperConverged Appliance.
  • StarWind HyperConverged Appliance allows you to run hyper-converged infrastructure for a fraction of the cost of other solutions.
  • They offer proactive support to quickly identify problems in your environment.
  • StarWind HyperConverged Appliance virtual san software works as advertised and does so efficiently and effectively.
  • I would like to see some better power management/additional sync settings during an unplanned power outage.
StarWind HyperConverged Appliance is an excellent solution for small/medium organizations where storage and compute needs don't change too drastically from year to year. It may not be great for a large organization that is constantly adding more computing and storage. With many organizations moving resources to the cloud and downsizing local resources, this may be a good solution to control costs but still run capable hardware.

We were looking to replace a large amount of older physical servers, and move to a smaller footprint, with a lot more virtualized systems. We also wanted to be able to increase uptime of our server by being able to failover between nodes. We had all our eggs in one basket - a single powerful Hyper-V server running VM's which ran our business systems and customer systems. If that machine had died our business would've died. We implemented HCA and were then able to load balance and have resiliency for all of our systems across the infrastructure estate. We initially ran with a demo system, a couple of older servers with some high-speed network cards configured using the StarWind software - which was provided as a demonstration even with some technical support for a number of months, so that we could try the system out. We had some very niche bespoke software that we provided to the recruitment industry, which in turn used some bespoke indexing and categorising software which was very picky on how it run. StarWind amazed us by being able to host this bespoke software on the HCA and fail over between nodes with Live Migrate without any issues whatsoever.
  • Provides a stable platform for Hyper-V.
  • Provides fast migrations between Failover Clustering nodes.
  • Provides powerful branded servers in a simple solution.
  • Provides a fantastic management interface.
  • Easy to configure and simple to manage.
  • Initial configuration could do with more documentation.
  • A fully supported trial version.
  • A minimal GUI version for the Free version after license expiry.
Perfectly suited to SMB due to an amazing price/performance benefit. I believe the hardware scales up and outwards. It is available in a number of configurations. It would suit smaller companies who are not ready to move fully to a cloud provider and still wish to retain a "private cloud" in a datacentre. The hardware configurations could do with being able to have alot more flexible configuration of RAM/CPU/Disks. Although I guess this is down to it being a fixed set of servers.

We were in the middle of an installation of a new ERP system and we were needed a stable server that would be running 24/7 since we are working round-the-clock and in multiple locations around the world. When looking for a redundant system to put some of our most important VMs (HyperV), we found a Starwind solution. We got a great demo from the StarWind sales department and we proceeded with a 2 node server. Until now, this is one of the best systems that we have and we have increased our partnership with them with another 3 node server. We had some issues with the creation of the CSV and other small issues, but the support from their customer service is really great and proactive. I say proactive because they are keeping track of the system alerts and contacting us to offer their help. "
  • Strong customer focus (great support)
  • Overall cost
  • Proactive support / advice
  • A bit hard to implement at the beginning but worked with the help of the support
  • I would have purchased a 3 node instead of a 2 node to start. The 3 node is better since we can have 2 servers down and still be running.
  • Since the 3 nodes are plugged together, the cabling management is a bit of a mess behind the server but not so bad either.
Where StarWind HCA is at his best is for his proactive support and their knowledge in addition to their low-cost systems. Their support team is here from start to finish and makes sure everything goes great on our side. The hardware provided is rock solid and the use is limitless, depending on your need, you can go small or big with more redundancy. I don't see any scenarios where it is less appropriate.

We settled on StarWind HyperConverged Appliance (HCA) as a less expensive alternative to VMWare's more expensive license for vSAN shared storage between our two VMWare hosts, providing full hardware redundancy of everything. The peace of mind knowing that all of our data and VMs are running on two fully redundant hosts is amazing.
  • Fully redundant shared storage (vSAN)
  • Proactive monitoring of all of the hardware
  • 24/7 support
Having an admittedly limited personal experience with only this one implementation, I can't compare any other scenarios to mine. What I can say is their support has been amazing and very proactive, and even though they do not formally provide VMWare support, their expertise and willingness to do what they can when a need arises has been excellent and extremely appreciated, to the point that I haven't had to go to VMWare directly for support since purchasing and migrating everything to the new hosts. One negative aspect with the initial setup was, at the time of our order/deployment, they didn't have a Linux version of their management VMs for VMWare (only for Hyper-V), so I had to use two of my Windows Server licenses for their Windows-Server-based management VMs for the first year, which did put me in a bit of a bind, but, they finally released the Linux versions, and remoted in and quickly and expertly switched them over with very little downtime (we did it over the weekend), and it was completely uneventful.

StarWind HCA is our backbone for our Hyper V environment which runs nearly all processes for our college. We run many different virtual servers on the hardware to serve all needs It was selected due to the value a virtual environment brings over traditional physical hardware. Our old hardware was extremely expensive to support and complicated to manage. StarWind solved both those problems.
  • Great performance of hardware.
  • Cost effective.
  • Great support.
  • Facelift management console.
  • Management console better guides.
  • More complete documentation.
StarWind works great in our small environment. It was very easy to implement and continue to manage. It increased our performance many times over our old equipment I would guess at some point a large environment would make sense to have a separate host and network and storage with a bigger team to manage it all but for small environments it is great.

It is being used across the organization. We had experienced some data loss due to a failed backup and knew that we needed to address that in the future. Not only does it give us redundancy on-site (mirrored HA servers) it brought us up to an all-flash solution as well. The performance is amazing.
  • StarWind HCA just flat out works. It is a simple solution for a business on a budget!
  • Support Support Support. Their support is second to none. I never have to worry about contacting their support because I know they will take care of us.
  • The all-flash solution brought us to a new level of speed and under budget!
  • Their pre-install questionnaire could be a little more clear on what they are asking.
  • When ordering the servers, I would have liked the option to include the not-included cable management arms.
StarWind is the PERFECT fit for a smaller business that is looking for an affordable but well-supported HCI solution. We looked at several other vendors and StarWind blew them all away with their pricing and support. Their setup support and migration support were the best. I was able to work with the same person the whole time.

Our StarWind HyperConverged Appliance is the core of our organization. All of our critical VMs are hosted on it including SQL databases, line of business applications, ERP software, as well as network monitoring and management software. Being an SMB we needed a highly available VM platform that was cost-effective and not as complex as HA setups with traditional SANs.
  • Stable, we have yet to have any downtime due to StarWind HyperConverged Appliance software
  • Simple and easy to manage
  • Proactive support contacts us if issues are detected
  • Could have been better communication during implementation
  • Single pane of glass management console for cluster, VM, and backup operations has been slow to develop.
  • If you want to set up Starwind vSAN in a lab to test, setup can be tedious. However, with the HCA itself StarWind HyperConverged Appliance handles all of that.
StarWind HyperConverged Appliance is great for SMBs looking for cost-effective and easy HA solutions. Even if you are a growing company the platform is essentially commodity hardware that can be upgraded or you can add nodes as you grow. Even though it is cost effective that doesn't mean it isn't capable. You're using a standard Hyper-V cluster and you still have the full features of that platform.

I manage a number of different IT environments ranging in the 10-500 staff level

Starwind by far provided the best bang for the buck. The big players are a stretch pricewise for the clients in this range and Starwind beats them everytime

Having said that – Starwind performs just as well performance wise. I opt for all flash arrays everytime and I see they made the announcement they are only selling all flash. This is a great move as all flash at the server level is an absolute game changer. Whole environments run so much smoother and really makes the IT admins life easier. If we have to deploy on prem servers its all flash or nothing for us. Having instant failover redundancy helps me sleep easier at night.

What also sets Starwind apart is the support. They have techs that are not just call routers that actually know and can troubleshoot issues 24x7. Most do have accents which may be an issue for some, but everyone I have worked with in support has been patient and professional so in my opinion this is not an issue. Besides at the end of the day the goal is to solve issues which you definitely will achieve.

There are several other competitors in this space which I did look at, but Starwind was just really easy to work with, has resources on every team to get you what you need (Pre sales, design, management escalation, and tech support) provided the specs I needed, so I didn’t really need to look much further.

How they can offer all of this and 24x7 level support and provide the hardware at extremely affordable costs is beyond me. There is no question for future purchases Starwind will be my #1 go to.

We had a hodge-podge of Hyper-V servers of various ages, capacity, and speed - some being upwards of 10 years old. Finally got budget to upgrade and made the most of the money by going HCA opposed to traditional host + SAN. Going HCA allowed us to not have a huge expenditure on networking.
  • Well within budget.
  • Easy management.
  • High availability.
  • Needed to work with sales to get any sort of pricing.
I can imagine this would be a nice solution for similar situations to ours - hardware refresh with additional redundancy. We have ~100 VMs using ~480GB RAM and 50TB. These are VMs with similar CPU needs, so it worked out well. If there are one-off VMs with higher CPU needs, I would look at maybe a separate cluster. Trying to do too much would have been much more expensive.

We are an IT service provider. A new area that we wanted to branch out into is hosting services/data for our customers. Starwind HyperConverged appliances helped us do just that. With two clusters, we are now hosting critical servers for our customers and are also able to give our customers offsite data backup for their onsite servers with disaster recovery into our private cloud.
  • Tech Support. Starwind proactive tech support reaches out to us when they detect an issue instead of us having to initiate the support call. Then their technician will stay with us through the entire process until a resolution is found.
  • Affordability. Starwind HCA is very aggressively priced while still able to offer all of the needed features that you look for in an HCA solution.
  • Simplicity. Starwind offers network-less 2 and 3 node clusters. This way you can have a stable failover cluster without needing to monitor and maintain a separate storage network stack.
  • Multi cluster console. Currently, their management console is only able to attach to a single cluster at a time. I'm told that they have multi-cluster management high on their list of new features to be added so hopefully that is added soon.
  • Tech support locations. Currently, their tech support is located in eastern Europe. While they are staffed 24/7 there can be a language barrier at times trying to listen through thick accents. They are always very patient and never complain, even when I ask them to repeat themselves multiple times.
Starwind HCA is the perfect solution for small to medium businesses wanting the high availability of a cluster without the complexity of a traditional cluster/SAN architecture. In a 2 or 3 node setup, there is no need for a separate storage switch stack as the nodes can all be directly connected. This improves simplicity while still offering great availability and speed. In large enterprises where you want to have a large number of nodes, it may make more sense to separate the storage and compute stacks.

We are a small to mid-sized Eye Clinic that in 2015, had to upgrade our Patient Management & Billing system so deciding to stick with our current vendor, we migrated to their “cloud” product which is a hosted RDS Farm solution. Our 2 year experience on their “cloud” was coupled with numerous outages and continual slowness issues on a weekly basis. In 2017, we decided to bring the system back on-premise and so we began looking for a solution to run it along with our other virtual machines. Fault-tolerance was the primary requirement in our search and having worked with VMware vSAN in the past, we knew that it would be a viable solution but also one that would exceed the budget. That's when we discovered the StarWind HyperConverged Appliance, a 2-node highly available solution that fell within the allotted budget. We purchased the StarWind solution and it ran flawlessly for 2 years, then in late 2019, the unthinkable happened, our clinic caught fire and the building and all its contents were destroyed. Knowing we had offsite backups, we just needed the hardware to restore our servers. In contacting our StarWind account rep, they completely understood the circumstance we were in and accelerated the order, build, and shipment of the new 2-node appliance. As management worked on obtaining an alternate building to restore the service of treating our patients, the servers were delivered to my home so the restoration process could begin. The StarWind engineering and support staff were a tremendous help as they assisted in the restoration process. Knowing that StarWind will drop and do what’s needed to help a customer in dire straights has won us over as a faithful customer for life...thank you StarWind!!!
  • Price point for the HyperConverged Appliances is unbeatable and needs to be looked at if your considering a HCA solution.
  • The pro-active system monitoring service that is available with the HyperConverged Appliances is exceptional.
  • The product fully meets our needs and there are no areas needing improvement from our perspective.
The StarWind HyperConverged Appliance solution is scalable so it'll work in a simple 2-node cluster up to any quantity you need to meet your requirements so I don't believe there is any scenario where it won't work. Sales and support are there to help you determine what is the right solution for you.

We are currently using StarWind HCA to build out a flexible, distributed storage system. We had a myriad of file, application and database servers that ranged from physical to virtual. StarWind helped us consolidate and make the necessary physical to virtual server moves (P2V) and the entire process was very pleasant. This system also allows us to achieve high availability (HA) across the entire IT infrastructure that we are responsible for which was a major driving decision. This was all completed at an affordable price point for an SMB, which was also a key element for an NPO.

We had to replace an aging classic infrastructure because the cost to support and maintain every part of it was pretty high. Also, the SAN was becoming rather complex to maintain, and the time to resolution on tickets was pretty long with that vendor.
We spent some time looking at different solutions, since we have resources with experience on a wide range of hyper-converged solutions, including VxRail, Simplivity, and Nutanix. To a point, we did get quoted from a highly renown solution, but it was simply too expensive.
Then we found Starwind. They were offering a Hyperconverged solution that is very well priced and offers remote monitoring/support, resolving both the cost and support issues we had with the previous multivendor solution.
  • Well, for us the main factor behind our choice wasn't pricing. We chose their solution because of the support they provide. We have a fairly small team, and having someone else look at the clusters and notify us when an issue occurs was a selling point.
  • Then, obviously, came the second most important factor. Cost. This is simply the cheapest Hyperconverged solution we could find. Yet it offers features comparable to the very expensive solutions.
  • The solution is perfect for our use case, so it's rather hard to mention a point to improve on. The only thing I'd like to see is the use of a web console instead of having to maintain an installed client on the admin workstations or servers.
Well, it's a Hyperconverged Cluster. I can't really provide a use case for everyone. I can only talk about our context.
We use it in three data centers around the world, two of them being smaller remotely managed ones. So having a two-node cluster instead of a 25U 3 servers+SAN setup is definitely welcome. We reduced cooling, power and space requirements.

We used to have 4 Dell PowerEdge hosts running various version of Microsoft Hyper-V with no redundancy.
We are also running out of storage space and have been dealing with the increasing complexity of Windows server licensing. We investigated and received proposals from three vendors (Dell, Scale Computing and StarWind). Ultimately the main decision point was cost. StarWind is the only vendor that only needs two nodes to set up the cluster. Not only did we save on the extra node, we also did not have to license another Windows Server Datacenter edition. Our StarWind HCA has been in production for over 12 months, and we have had no issue or a single instance of downtime so far. And it has achieved our goals of centralizing storage management because of the StarWind Virtual SAN, added fault tolerance, and simplified Microsoft server licensing by using the Data Center edition.

  • Centralize Storage management via the StarWind Virtual SAN.
